Munjya, directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, is a 2024 Indian Hindi-language supernatural comedy horror film that captivates with its blend of folklore, humor, and horror. Starring Sharvari, Abhay Verma, Mona Singh, and Sathyaraj, the film is the fourth installment in the Maddock Supernatural Universe. Produced by Amar Kaushik and Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films, the movie explores the legend of the Munjya, inspired by Indian folklore.
The story begins in 1952 in a Konkan village, where young Brahmin boy Gotya falls in love with an older girl named Munni. When Munni’s marriage is arranged to another man, Gotya tries to poison him but fails. Under a peepal tree, Gotya tries black magic out of desperation in an attempt to win Munni. However, in a tragic twist, he dies during the ritual and transforms into a malevolent spirit named Munjya, haunting the tree for decades.
Fast forward to the present, Bittu, a timid hairdresser in Pune, starts experiencing nightmares involving the peepal tree where Munjya resides. Bittu travels to his ancestral village for a family event, only to discover that his father had died under mysterious circumstances linked to the Munjya. Despite warnings, Bittu ventures to the haunted tree and encounters the vengeful spirit.
Munjya possesses Bittu, demanding that he marry Munni’s granddaughter, Bela, who looks just like Munni. With the help of his eccentric friend Spielberg and exorcist Elvis, Bittu devises a plan to trick Munjya and free himself from the spirit’s grip. The journey to outsmart Munjya is filled with humor, horror, and heartfelt moments, making the film deeply engaging and relatable.
The climax is a thrilling mix of action and emotion. Bittu, now armed with his grandmother’s cane, confronts Munjya. The final battle under the peepal tree is intense, with Bittu using ancient symbols to trap Munjya. The audience was so engrossed that whispers filled the theater during intermission and even after the movie ended, showing how deeply the story resonated with them.
Director Aditya Sarpotdar delivers a film that is a complete package of newness, entertainment, education, and great presentation. The cinematography captures the eerie beauty of the haunted locations, and the special effects bring the Munjya legend to life. Sharvari and Abhay Verma give standout performances, with strong support from Mona Singh and Sathyaraj. It offers a perfect blend of horror, comedy, and folklore. Its engaging narrative, strong performances, and exceptional direction make it a must-watch. Munjya is a fresh and entertaining addition to the Maddock Supernatural Universe, leaving a lasting impact on the audience.
