Unlocking the Secrets of Hugs

In this exploration of hugs, Dr Amrinder delves into the diverse array of embraces ranging from socialite air kisses to heartfelt Punjabi jhappi, exclusively for Different Truths.

There are hugs and then there are hugs
As I describe in depth below:

There’s an apology of a hug with air kisses
That socialites give at Page-3 parties

There is the sideways hug of the conscientious
Lest the soft, protuberant parts of each sex
Compress, leading to unwanted responses.

The ‘Hema Malini Hug’ includes hands-on
The shoulders of her hero, so that,
Their bodies aligned but did not press.

Then there is the hearty Punjabi jhappi with
A smacking kiss on the cheek that conveys
Genuine, exuberant pleasure.

Though a violent bone-crushing clench
Can literally take your breath away.

The clasp of passion can only be released,
After stars explode and bodies go limp,

The bear-hug, a gentle giant of a father, gives
Offers affection, protection, and succour.

While the circle of his mother’s arms is
The whole world to a little child but

The teary embrace of an ageing mother
At the airport, only embarrasses, a
Grown-up son, ready to fly the nest.

Hugs of sympathy offer consolation to the
Bereaved, sob on comforting bosoms.

Finally, there is the virtual hug between the virtual
Strangers sent through WhatsApp and emails
In the hope that one day they turn into reality.

These are all the types of hugs I could think of
But if you know of any more, please add them
In this poem.
