Here’s Sukanya report of a unique protest in the US, as Odd News, in her regular column, Anything American. The emergence of Donald Trump into the American political arena has been horrifying to many. His racists, misogynistic rants, his constant bigotry has not augured well. He has created a climate of fear and suspicion. Being an immigrant, I find most of his speeches are incitements. And also I understand that whoever endorses Trump is not only in support of his take on trade and commerce but also endorses everything that he stands for. They are endorsing his views on immigration, his take on Muslims, the fact that he wants to label them, (give them badges– badges!), his mockery of a differently abled person, his hurtful words towards women. They are okay also with his punishing women who seek abortions. Everything. How can you separate that from the man?
Trump is not trying to make America great again, he is making America hateful. And is the country not being able to comprehend that? Or is that they always wanted? Yes, it bothers me and I have every right to be disturbed. I live here. I am incapable of compromising my morality even a little bit to try and see why Trump should be the President.
Trump is not about differences in fiscal ideology or international issues, confined to just politics. Trump is about personal divisiveness. He is a vile being who feeds on fear, who follows the policy of divide and rule and he is succeeding. I fear him, but America seems to be loving him and he might as well end up being our President, according to some experts.
Trump has had his fair and more share of protesters. Some have been violent, agitated, angry, and some have done it very peacefully. This one protest against Trump is very unique. It is unusual for me and I find it bold too. It takes a lot of courage to cast aside ones clothes and stand nude with others in front of a camera.
Now, everyone does not have the perfect body. However comfortable you might be with your body, to show it to the world you have to be fearless. And you have to have complete belief in doing what you are doing. These women believed in that. One hundred women of different body shapes, colours and walks of life congregated in one venue. Throngs of naked women, sans clothes, bras, panties or even the minuscule thongs stood there showing their disdain towards Trump.
Along with sunup, 100 women completely naked holding round mirrors stood facing the Republican National Convention (RNC) arena. It was a day before the convention kicked off. There was silence all around except for the snaps and clicks of cameras. And the artist, Spencer Tunick, who organised it, had this to say this about the mirrors, “The mirrors communicate that we are a reflection of ourselves and the world that surrounds us.” The whole purpose was to combat Trump’s inflammatory comments against women and minorities. They posed naked as an art installation piece titled, “Everything she says means everything”.
As weird as it seems this is a novel way to protest. This is how much indignation Trump has managed to create. Women are willing to show umbrage even in their nakedness.
Here are some of the comments from the participants which I found online:
“As a woman, I want to stand up for my reproductive rights. As a Hispanic, I want to be seen as a member of this community. As a first generation American, I want to show that anyone deserves the opportunity to come here. As a young woman, I want to embrace my body and everyone else’s size and shape. As a human being, I want to stand up against Trump and other Republicans whose hateful speech towards women, immigrants, LBGT people, and all ‘others’ is poisoning this nation.”
And another voice:
“I very much appreciate and identify with the mission of this piece. On a political level, my participation will be in contrast to many Republican ideals regarding the use of women’s bodies. My body. My body is mine and I choose how it is used, from abortion to posing nude publicly. On a personal level, I wish to experience public nudity. As a recent rape survivor, I struggle to form a positive relationship with my body and to be present with and in it versus reliving its past trauma. I hope that by trusting the fellow participants with my nudity and sharing in that vulnerability that I will grow closer to loving my body again. For what’s it’s capable of on every level. For its true cosmic nature.”
