Being self-compassionate is just about avoiding pleasing others at your own cost or stopping treating yourself too sternly for a trivial mistake you made inadvertently. Ritambhara shares three tips to love ourselves, in the weekly column, exclusively for Different Truths.
Self-love might be a difficult concept to understand as sometimes it is judged by others for being selfish. But, over the years, I have gathered that being self-compassionate is just about avoiding pleasing others at your own cost or stopping treating yourself too sternly for a trivial mistake you made inadvertently. Here are three things I learned as I began my journey to love myself.
# Your Social Media Posts are no Authentication of Your Happiness
In the modern world where people seemingly have more well-wishers on screen than in real life, social media posts have high accountability towards happiness. Well, when you start realizing that the number of likes and comments on your social media posts are no validation of your merriment, your self-love begins. You realise the photoshopped and filtered images and bragging about belongings and destinations visited by anyone on social media is superfluous and you can very well judge the pain behind the illusion, your self-love finds a major place in your life.
# Your Propinquity to People Changes Once you Realise Your Self Worth
In the opportunistic world, the loyalty of the people exists as long as their needs exist. Opportunistic people are teeming all around you. Once you cease fulfilling their needs at your own cost, your relationship with them will also cease to exist. So, learn to take care of yourself as no one else will. Realize your self-worth and learn to say no to those who don’t deserve you. Recognising your self-worth will bring out the best people in your life.
# Your Contentment Lies in Your Passion, not in Pleasing Others
As you begin to love yourself, you will find that you no longer need to please people around you. Your true contentment lies in pursuing your passion and keeping yourself engrossed in fruitful tasks rather than thinking of about what people will think about your actions. You don’t need anyone’s approval for doing right things in your life. You will find very less number of people who would advise you without having their own interest. Most people will only guide you as per their convenience having their own vested means. Well, that doesn’t mean everyone around you falls into that category, but you should learn to recognise the true and worthy faces. If there is something you should please, it should be your dreams and your passion.
