The Missing Content and Intent

With the emergence of new platforms, the number of content creators has significantly increased. The only problem is that most of the content creators do not share important content, states Enakshi. An exclusive for Different Truths.

Michael Dell has said that it is through curiosity and looking at opportunities that we have always mapped our path. He was right. Opportunities never fail to knock at our door. They are always there. We just have to cherry-pick the ones that will actually help us shine! Sadly, this doesn’t seem to be happening these days. With the emergence of new platforms, the number of content creators has significantly increased. The only problem is that most of the content creators do not share important content!

The purpose of YouTube was to allow artists from different fields and places to come together and share meaningful content with each other. There was a clear intent and the YouTubers were determined enough to ensure that their content was watched and appreciated if it was good. With the advent of various video-sharing platforms like TikTok, Vimeo, Twitch, IGTV Instagram and several others, the opportunities have definitely increased but the quality of content has gone down terribly. While earlier you could learn and enjoy watching videos, now you only enjoy, for there is nothing to learn from what is shared.

Exploring Instagram and scrolling idly through the Facebook wall are the two habits that I despise yet cannot get rid of. However hard I try to avoid looking for an interesting feed, I end up criticising the videos that are just pious claptrap! I end up watching videos where people are imitating the celebrities, dancing on old numbers, following silly challenges or trying to crack a joke but failing miserably. Such videos are not entertaining. I wouldn’t have watched them if I hadn’t been at home for more than three months. Yet, these videos do have a purpose- to get more limelight and gather more likes and followers.

Just the other day, I was caught unawares by the forward that one of my friends sent me. It was a #sharetheload challenge. The absurdity of the challenge was immense. It demanded me to film a short video (say of about 20 seconds) holding the mop in my hand, then mopping and finally throwing away the mop towards my right. What was the purpose, you might ask? I don’t know! Upon asking my friend, all I got in response was — just for fun. And then while scrolling through the Facebook wall, I chanced upon a similar video. Apparently, the purpose of that challenge was to make people aware of how sharing the load is important. I couldn’t help but wonder how is mopping for ten seconds and then throwing the mop to someone else was going to inspire others to give a hand and help! That’s how it works, said, my friend.

Often the people in my contact list upload TikTok videos as Whatsapp status. Those videos would have people imitating the emotions of the dialogue that plays in the background. Then there are some who make videos dancing on a viral tune. That’s not the end. There are videos in which one can change dresses, can get a makeover done in just a snap and can time travel from one place to another. Even celebrities are on such platforms sharing weird videos.

There are videos in which one can change dresses, can get a makeover done in just a snap and can time travel from one place to another. Even celebrities are on such platforms sharing weird videos. I remember watching Yuzvendra Chahal’s viral videos- the one in which his family could be seen breaking and shaking a leg and the other in which he was seen with a girl who jumped around him like crazy!

Many people will argue that making videos is not wrong and that it is a personal choice. I don’t deny that. All I care about is the fact that the purpose and intent have lost their way because of the availability of so many options. It is not limited to this field only. Umpteen number of writers have emerged, who cannot even write a single sentence correctly but take pride in calling themselves, authors. Several people are claiming themselves to be top-notch artists when all they have done is painted a picture of a horse. It pains my heart to admit that people have stopped valuing quality. It is more about fame and recognition than hard work, intent and content. Even in the film industry, the movies with substantial storyline are seldom released. All we have are movies like Mrs Serial Killer that are utter nonsense in terms of plot as well as acting.

It is said that too many cooks spoil the broth and hence, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that soon we all might become a victim in this rat race and in an attempt to harness fame and recognition, we, too, might ignore the quality but focus on what seems entertaining on the face value. After all, standing one’s ground is a difficult task, isn’t it?
