The way we running out of natural resources, energy conservation is the foremost step we need to take to Save Earth. Mahima shares tips on how by simple measures you might ensure that you conserve energy in your office, in the weekly column. A Different Truths exclusive.

There is so much talk about nature conservation, energy conservation these days. But how many of us actually take steps towards it so that our future generations might enjoy these natural resources.

With little effort at home and at our workplace, we can ensure that we take the first step in the right direction. As an independent journalist, I have a workspace in Delhi NCR, where I ensure that I conserve energy in the best possible manner. And believe me, it neither consumes any other resources (read money) nor eats into my time, through some easy, breezy measures that we can adopt in our fast running lives.

After all, there’s enough proof today that energy efficiency is not just the best way to keep your savings happy, but also decrease the carbon footprint. And thus keep the environs healthy.

These are the five ways to set up and energy efficient workspace.

  1. Light Colours on Outdoors

Ensure that the exteriors of the workplace are in a light/pastel colour. Like mine is white. The lighter the colour, the more will it radiate heat, thus keeping the inside of the building cooler. And this will ensure that your air conditioner does not work as hard as it needs to. Saves electricity bill and reduce the carbon footprint.

  1. Intelligent Use of Waste

When you say ‘throw it away’, there is nothing like ‘away’ on this Earth. You are simply throwing garbage from one part of the Earth to another. So the paper waste of my workspace goes for recycling (I do not buy newspapers, I read them on the internet, which again is an effort to save trees); the little kitchen garbage that we generate here is converted to compost for the plants I have in the balcony of my set-up and soon we’ll be getting the wash basin connected to the toilet flush-tank so that potable water supply does not go down the toilet drain. Recycle waste.

  1. Go Green Inside & Outside Office

We have both indoor and outdoor plants in my workspace, which not only give the office a cool look but also purify the air. And since they absorb the CO2 we generate inside office, they keep the inside cool. Let me state here that I have been allergic to pollution. And since the times I bought indoor plants, my allergy level has amazingly gone down. In your office’s case, plants will bring down the number of filters that you have to install, and the energy costs go down.

  1. Tap that Water

We do not have an RO system in our workspace since it wastes 2/3rd of the water. If you have one, either connect it to toilet flush tanks or use that water to nurture the plants. But the best suggestion is, opt for copper water filters. Ancient health scriptures have a detailed analysis on how copper storage is beneficial for health. Also, that water dripping from air conditioners – simply collect it in buckets and use for watering the plants.

  1. LED Bulbs instead of Fluorescent Lamps

Replace fluorescent lamps (commonly known as tube-lights), CFLs and ordinary electric bulbs with LED, they conserve three times the energy and also last longer.

Small steps that will go a big way to conserve energy. And the same need to be implemented at homes as well. It is just a small beginning. Share your ideas with us.
