Allahabad Nagar Nigam is dumping more than 100 trucks of city waste in Village Baswar, under Chaka Block, without processing and cleaning it. Nagar Nigam pays Rs 600 per tonne for processing and cleaning but the filthy waste is dumped without cleaning, it was informed.
More than Rs 36 lacs are paid per month for collection and transport although all trucks and manpower is of the Nagar Nigam. The entire money is pocketed by the contractor company, which is politically powerful, the release added.
The waste dump is a mountain, the area is full of stink and flies and the waste is overflowing on to the neighbouring fields, making farming impossible. During the rains this waste flows into the river Jamuna undermining the ‘Clean Ganga, Clean Sangam’ programme, it was pointed out.
The meeting urged the Nagar Nigam and district authorities to stop dumping the waste and to immediately clean the existing waste.
The meeting also addressed the problems of illegal police taxes on tractors supplying sand, atrocities on Dalits, imposition of false cases on workers, non-implementation of rationing (PDS), MNREGA, pension, failure to repair hand pumps and drains, and massive corruption in these schemes, etc., according to the media release.
