Ode to my Father

Deyasini explores different layers of relationships through her father, in this poem, exclusively for Different Truths.

When your rains pitter-patter on my mind’s pane
And your wind swooshes away my Vision’s curtain
I see you hold us tight as the sparkly tinsel
Bracing our hundred years old Christmas tree
I see the silvery wisdom of Oak in you
Turning us grey.

In winters to come, the memory of this
Shall serve as a roaring log fire
Rasping in our heart’s grate
Keeping us warm throughout
Engraving the unhurried joys on life’s slate

And in summer again, I shall stumble upon the joy
Of folding it gently and placing it in our Grandma’s
Brand new Alzheimer’s Almirah
To jumble summer for autumn and spring for winter
For there shall it be warmed sometimes for months,
Sometimes for years for the warmth it resonates
To brace us in winter.

Deyasini is a budding young poet who hails from Chandannagar, in West Bengal, India. She’s recently pursued her Postgraduate degree in English and Comparative Literature from Pondicherry University, India. She’s contributed to various Anthologies and National and International e-journals of repute. She loves to set recourse to the idyllic and pastoral and record her impressionably sensitive response to the lilting cadence of Nature rendered in a swirl of lurid slashes and subtle brush strokes.
