Magical Monsoon!

With summer at its peak, Shaili recalls the joys of monsoon and what it meant for her at various stages of her life. A Different Truths exclusive.

Monsoon will soon arrive, painting the nature picture perfect. The lush surroundings will become a more beautiful enchanting shade of green!  The promise of rains brings new hopes for a cool and pleasant day ahead where mercury will surely dip lower. Yet monsoons are perceived in different ways at different stages in life. Its significance is different for different people.

Well monsoon brings beauty for some, but others really don’t seem to enjoy the rains so much. They have household related chores that get interrupted. I myself have valued monsoon showers in different measures. When I was a little school-going girl, I would await monsoon showers eagerly as on many days of heavy rainfall, there was no school. Our school would declare at least three to four ‘rainy day’ holidays every session, much to my delight!

It was such childish pleasure to watch rain drops fall pitter-patter upon my windows and on the roof top of our house.

The entire day would be spent in reading story books, painting pictures and other such leisurely activities. My mother could easily be coaxed into making hot pakoras (fritters) and ginger tea. It was such childish pleasure to watch rain drops fall pitter-patter upon my windows and on the roof top of our house. Sometimes, we even ran out to have a pleasant bath in the rains. Those were days of sheer innocence!

Youth and college brought love, beauty and romance. I would still go to my college even when it rained. Meeting friends was very important and could not be missed! We used to hang around in our college canteen ordering hot and sizzling chowmein, momos and burgers, washing it down with hot mugs of coffee.

We would watch the rains and admire the beauty all around us! Such was the charm of rains during college life.

There were interesting discussions and even debates in our college canteen. We would watch the rains and admire the beauty all around us! Such was the charm of rains during college life.

Thereafter came a busy schedule, while I was working for The Times of India. I was ambitious, impulsive, restless and always on the move. I had deadlines to meet and even rains could not deter me from doing so! I was keen to impress my editor and the beauty of rains had lost its meaning somewhere. I had things to prove, targets to meet. I was always in a hurry. Rain or shine did not matter to me.

I enjoyed sharing a precious cup of coffee or an occasional red wine with my partner, when it rained.

Then came marriage and settling down. I had slowed down. I stopped running around for things. My husband was doing that for me! I enjoyed sharing a precious cup of coffee or an occasional red wine with my partner, when it rained. I began to relax more and took life easy.

The birth of my son, however, once again, had me running around! Having a row of wet nappies on rainy days was a nightmare! Rain meant clothes of the baby not drying on time and his little tummy problems! Well then one fine day my son grew up as all children do! One wonders how and when! So now I watch the rain falling from the heavenly skies with my son! He gasps and jumps, and I cheer up! Monsoons are surely special and magical, have always been!
