Kumbh 2019: Sanitary Workers Protest Low Wages, Long Working Hours

Sanitary workers in Kumbh area are demanding for wage increase from Rs 285 per day to Rs 600 per day being almost 24 hours long. There are about 25,000 of sanitary workers, all employed through contractors. A report for Different Truths.

There has been a good mobilisation of sanitary workers in Kumbh area for wage increase from Rs 285 per day to Rs 600 per day being almost 24 hours long. There are about 25,000 of sanitary workers, all employed through contractors and paid through them. Demands also include removal of middlemen, regular supply of ration, etc. Workers are required to clean the 1.2 lakh mobile toilets deployed without water connections, stated a press release.

Nearly 800 sanitary workers rallied on February 2nd. The young DM was spitting fire because the world was watching how these workers were destroying India’s image. He threatened that he would file cases against them. The leaders stood firm that the workers were merely enhancing the democratic credentials of the country in front of the world, it was stated.

The DM rebuked the workers for being misled by vested interest. He was happy that one worker, who is also preparing for entrance tests, stood up and spoke humbly in broken words. The DM thought the morale will break. But when the worker related their pathetic working and living conditions, the DM left in a huff, the release added.

Meanwhile, Divya and Bhavya Kumbh continues. The UP government of Yogi says they have invested Rs 4,300 crores and will reap a revenue of Rs. 1.22 lakh crores. Sadly, there is no trickle down of this huge profit for sanitary workers.

The next standoff is on the 6th of February. Renowned civil rights activists of Allahabad have been living with and rallying the workers, the press release stated.
