Sarika shares the recipe of Spinach Idlis, in the weekly column, exclusively in Different Truths.
According to the information in Wikipedia, Idli is a traditional breakfast in South Indian households. Idli is a savoury cake that is popular throughout India and neighbouring countries like Sri Lanka. The cakes are made by steaming a batter consisting of fermented black lentils (de-husked) and rice. The fermentation process breaks down the starches so that they are more readily metabolised by the body.
But, Idle has many variations locally. Often nuts and vegetables can be included in the idli. I decided to add a little more health factor in it. Adding spinach to it, made it colorful and added more nutrients.
I am sharing a very common and easily available recipe from Hyderabad. Idli is very popular in South Indian households. However, my son is not fond of idli, so I tried a different way. He kind of liked it.
Here is the recipe:
Spinach Idli
Total time 20 minutes 4 Servings
Ingredients
3 cups Idli batter
2-cups Spinach (roughly chopped)
Salt according to taste
Half teaspoon red chilli powder
1 pinch Garam masala powder
Cooking oil, to grease
Carom seeds quarter teaspoon.
Method
To prepare Spinach Idli, clean the spinach leaves.
Blanch them in hot water for 3 to 4 minutes.
When cooled, puree them in a blender.
Pour a cup of idli batter in a mixing bowl and transfer the spinach puree into the bowl, and add salt, red chilli powder, carom seeds, garam masala and mix well with a ladle.
Grease the idli steamer with oil,
Unfold a spoonful of the batter into steamer and steam for 10 to 12 minutes or until the idlis are cooked properly.
After few minute, when it cools down a bit, de-mould the steamed Spinach Idlis with the help of a spoon.
Serve healthy Spinach Idli with your favourite dip aka chutney and don’t forget to add ghee (clarified butter) for a nice combination for breakfast or snacks.
Enjoy the health food with your loved ones!
