The Rule Book and Lawlessness

A protest poem about the rule book and lawlessness, by Pankhuri, that addresses the gender issue, exclusively for Different Truths.

Where the rights of the people
Would be written down
Safe forever! Engraved!
For security and posterity
Which would glisten as guiding light
Each time there was a feud
Or a dispute over the rights of the people!
The Magna Carta would step in
And spell it all out!

King John of England
Presided over it
The archbishop of Canterbury
Drafted it! It was to establish
Peace between an unpopular king
And his rebellious barons
It even tackled the question
Of wrongful imprisonment!
The Magna Carta was indeed
A document of People’s rights!

But does that mean
One has to carry it always
All the time, with oneself
On oneself, along with our bodies
In a bag, in defence
But like a gun! Asserting loudly
‘Look its written’
‘See it for yourself’, ‘it’s right here’
Just like the Constitution crystal clear!

And why should I have it
In my pockets or by heart?
And if not, how can
So many attacks continue
On women? The fair sex?

  • Lovely Dear Pankhuri Sinha, remembering and reiterating the people’s rights emphasized in our constitution quoting ‘Magna Carta’. The Constitution of India has its Special Features over all the constitution of the other countries, that it has the best human rights principles available in other constitution. Let’s celebrate this and salute those constitution makers of India.
