Dawood Depressed, Dawn of a New Son, Peak XV Everest, and From Akhila to Hadiya

The Mafia don Dawood’s only son has become a Maulana. Is he paying for his father’s sin, who is depressed with his son’s decision?  The gharana politics is so deep in the Congress party that he is the sole contender for the post of Congress Party. The highest mountain in the world is named after George Everest in 1856, the first surveyor general of India. Annulled by HC, Shefin Jahan’s marriage to a Hindu convert is being investigated by the NIA. But Akhila’s journey to become Hadiya began long before she met him. These are some of the news last week that Shail reports in verse, exclusively in Different Truths.

Dawood Depressed

Karma disbelievers better believe.

What you do comes back to you.

Look what’s happened to infamous don

the one and only,

Dawood Almighty –

his only son, heir to his underworld dare

stabs his father in the business back.

Giving up notorious pursuits for the better good

he converts from underworld extortion

to priesthood retribution

away from all that made his father abominably rich

Dawood’s son now with family builds a new life

stitch by stitch.

Will ‘blood is thicker than water’ finally come true

or will son Moin prove that being a Maulana is the real goodness brew?

Dawn of a New Son

Expected to happen anytime,

Rahul Gandhi takes over the mantle

of a mere son to political head gun

to a party whose history the oldest,

whose contributions to governance dynamic.

Big shoes to fill

for a boy who lived to see

his Prime Minister grandmother fall to bullets,

who agonisingly watched his father brutally torn apart.

Both Prime Ministers who ruled in the ways they thought best.

Both loved by the public despite their human frailties.

Now, ‘the darling of the Congress party’ attempts

to take their place

with political nuance, hopefully with grace.

None to obstruct his path within the party;

An elevation to be the head,

which others watch happily or patiently dread.

For a political ideology that brought freedom

to a termite-ridden doctrine gone berserk

a new sun is awaited to bring that change

Rahul, all wait for your plunge

to destroy the current Congress grunge.

Peak XV Everest?

We refer to it with pride,

its sight, height, everything leaves us wide-eyed.

Yes, it’s Mount Everest we are talking about

but did you know it wasn’t always known so?

It was Peak XV before

until a British surveyor George Everest

gauged it to be the highest summit in the world

so, though Chomolungma, Sagarmatha by name

honour is given to the British geographer;

to him, we hear an embarrassing fame.

Part of the Great Trigonometrical Survey.

We know to whom the mountain peak owes its name today.

From Akhila to Hadiya

Religion knows no parameters.

Faith needs no limitations.

Adherence to the voice of the heart

a mere response to the spirit of the soul.

Where we are born, a mere coincidence for some,

destined occurrence for others.

And yet, the belief we instill in our children,

the upbringing we bestow upon vulnerable minds

twists and turns an impressionable understanding

as it did for Akhila whose atheist father did everything

to meaninglessly strengthen her growing conflict

while staunch Hindu mother did nothing to stall

a daughter from faltering.

Caught between two worlds of belief and nonbelief

she chose a third faith over the other two-

It was the only thing then she thought right to do.

Her faith today is her weapon,

Her sail that keeps her boat from rocking.

The world has qualms about a conversion-

an insensitive society that can only cast aspersions.

Doubts are many, expected in a world rocked

with terrorists and violence

but who is to condemn a choice of faith,

when misery is the only wraith!
