Corn Chips: A Healthy and Delicious Mexican Snack

Now a days, evening snack is almost extinct. School timings are longer, kids are busy with multiple clubs. Most of the time they eat sandwiches, fruits or some dry snacks. Evening snacks with family. is now history. Snacking is fun. Sarika, our culinary expert, says that she keeps it alive on Fridays. She shares the healthy and delicious recipe, in the weekly column, exclusively for Different Truths.

During our childhood days, evening snack was something which we really looked forward to. Our evening snack was samosa, kachori, muri makha, jalebi, malpua and many more. Now a days, evening snack is almost extinct. School timings are longer, kids are busy with multiple clubs. Most of the time they eat sandwiches, fruits or some dry snacks. Evening snacks with family is now history. I personally try to keep this culture alive on Fridays.

I make sure that on most Fridays I prepare some interesting snacks for my family. Some old habits are good – at least, I believe so. May be in the future our son would treasure this moment.

Corn chips is one such snack that we relish and treasure during family snack time. Memo – son also requests for this particular snack, whenever his friends drop in.

I try to serve it in a healthy way. And the way I usually do it is shared below.

Corn Chips

Cuisine-Mexican                                                         Prep Time – 2mins

Cooking Time – 20mins

Ingredients

¾ cup maize flour

5 to 6tbsp plain flour

2 tsp oil

½ tsp carom seeds

Oil for deep frying

Salt to taste

Method

Add all the ingredients in a deep bowl.

Mix well and knead into soft dough.

Divide into three equal parts.

Roll a portion like roti (Indian bread) in 10-inch diameter.

Prick it evenly with a fork.

Cut into 16 equal triangles and keep aside.

Heat the oil in a deep non-stick pan.

Now, deep fry a few chips at a time.

Fry it until it turns golden brown on both sides.

After that drain the chips on an absorbent paper.

Continue the process until it is completed.

Cool and store in an airtight container.

How to serve

Serving is a very important part, reason first is that we eat through eyes before we taste it in our mouths.

You may serve it the way you want, like with barbecue sauce, Schwan sauce, teriyaki sauce and so on.

I usually serve with diced cucumber, tomatoes, cheese, chopped red onions and olives, sliced bell peppers, salsa with sour cream. Oregano with finely chopped cilantro and parsley and bake it for 3mins (it’s optional), I am fine without baking.

Enjoy a healthy and delicious snack.
