A Love Letter to Mahabaleshwar: Monsoon Getaway with Family

Last monsoon, in 2024, my family and I embarked on an unforgettable road trip to Maharashtra, with Mahabaleshwar as our special destination. We set out with excitement in our hearts, eager to embrace the magic of the monsoon. And oh, what a journey it turned out to be! The mist-kissed hills, the rhythmic drumming of raindrops, and the intoxicating aroma of wet earth wove together a tapestry of moments that we will cherish forever.

Having studied in Pune, I had experienced countless monsoons with my friends—each one filled with laughter, chai breaks, and spontaneous adventures. But this time, it was different. Exploring Mahabaleshwar with my beloved family added a whole new dimension to the experience. The joy of seeing my loved ones marvel at nature’s breathtaking artistry, feeling the cool breeze against our faces as we drove through winding roads, and relishing piping-hot corn by the roadside made it even more special.

A Little Paradise, Mahabaleshwar

Nestled in the heart of the Sahyadri ranges, Mahabaleshwar is a little paradise that comes alive when the rest of the country is battling the scorching summer heat. The lush green valleys, cascading waterfalls, and dreamy mist-laden mornings create an atmosphere straight out of a fairytale. Every turn of the road held a new surprise—a stunning viewpoint, a charming little eatery, or simply the joy of being lost in the moment.

That trip wasn’t just about travel; it was about togetherness, reliving old memories while creating new ones, and feeling the pulse of nature and letting it fill our souls with serenity. As the rain-drenched landscapes unfolded before us, I realised once again—some journeys aren’t just about the destination; they’re about the people, the emotions, and the stories that stay with you forever. Rambo our pet was just the cherry on the cake, and we made lifetime memories.

Nature, Flavours, and History

We started our adventure with a visit to the breathtaking viewpoints—Elephant Point, Kate’s Point, Arthur’s Seat, Sunset Point, and Parsi Point. Each of these spots offers a unique perspective of the valleys below, mist-kissed mountains, and the play of light on the Western Ghats.

Visited a local farm and indulged in freshly harvested strawberries—a burst of natural sweetness with every bite! Pair them with fresh cream for an authentic Mahabaleshwar delight.

Glide through the tranquil Veena Lake in a paddleboat and witness the sun melting into the horizon, though it was a rainy day still the sky in hues greyish orange. It’s a moment of peace!

A short trek through lush greenery leads to the Lingmala Waterfall, where cascading waters create a mesmerising spectacle. Only during the monsoon, you’ll see it in all its roaring glory!

Food Haven

From flavourful sandwiches to strawberries with cream, Mapro Garden is a haven for food lovers!  We tried their delicious syrups and jams before buying. For another treat, head to Bagicha Corner, where the strawberries taste just as divine!

A visit to the Cheese Factory offers an inside look at the art of cheese-making, topped off with scrumptious samples.

Steeped in history and spirituality, the Krishnabai Temple features an ancient stone cow from which the Krishna River originates, offering an aura of mystique. The Panchganga Temple marks the confluence of five sacred rivers, making it a revered spot for devotees and curious explorers alike.

Pratapgad Fort

The legendary Pratapgad Fort, where the fierce battle between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Afzal Khan unfolded in 1659. The fort offers breathtaking panoramic views and a deep dive into Maratha history. If you love stories of valour, this is the place to be, where monkeys were our constant travel friend.

I also found Pustkachi Gaon (a village where every family believes has their book library) sadly only the name exists I barely find any libraries except one small bookshop.

Mahabaleshwar in the monsoon isn’t just a destination—it’s a feeling of calm, connection, and celebration of nature’s raw beauty without any filter. we bid farewell, with souvenirs and snapshots but with a heart full of memories waiting to be relived. Until next time, Mahabaleshwar!
