Why is the Youth Caught in the Web of Intoxication to Become Adults?

The first and most vital problem of the teenagers is the risk of addiction. The overwhelming anxiety and unending thirst to taste new things be it alcohol, cigarette or drugs make them a victim of the intoxicating world, where there is nothing but failure. Often the push comes from peer pressure and tension in the academic, sporting and creative fields. These seemingly refreshing agents become the agents of destruction when continued for years, opines Subhajit, in the weekly column, exclusively for Different Truths.

The dawn of life that awakens the morning to carry forward the flag of a generation is a wholesome yet incomplete process. The journey is short but comprises of lots of lessons and falling. Teenage is the most vulnerable age prone to all sorts of misunderstandings and misconceptions. Lack of proper guidance subjects the age to those evil snakes that easily creep into the mind via an influence but leave behind the hollow skeleton at the end. Teens not only risk their own lives but also of others around them. The abundance of naive insensitive brains and lack of proper knowledge nourishes vicious thoughts that are concealed deep inside the mind, never to be revealed. Ignorance of the elders turns out to be the biggest advantage that pushes their children, especially adolescents towards adventures (read vices). The consequences keep haunting for the rest of their lives without any proper remedy other than repentance.

The first and most vital problem of the teenagers is the risk of addiction. The overwhelming anxiety and unending thirst to taste new things be it alcohol, cigarette or drugs make them a victim of the intoxicating world, where there is nothing but failure. Often the push comes from peer pressure and tension in the academic, sporting and creative fields, where they are required to excel. These seemingly refreshing agents become the agents of destruction when continued for years. They come in handy when the brain is unable to think of any better solution. To begin with, they act like soothing agents relieving a burden from the shoulders. As the time rolls, such addictions keep on increasing and it becomes a habit even for the smallest of problems or for the wee hours. They become inseparable elements of life with time, just like a companion for a lifetime.

The vulnerability is even more in the case of teens staying away from their family for the purpose of studies and sports in hostels and messes. Working parents staying away for most of the times can hardly spare any time to look into the lives of their children. Such teens easily fall prey to the addictive agents as they have nothing to do in their spare and vacant hours. They can’t share their problems with anybody at home. Boredom pushes them into such malpractice to replace the modes of healthy relaxations. The availability of master cards at ease lets plentiful expenditure no matter what to fulfil the craze of sniffing or injecting, smoking or drinking.

The consequences are quite frequently noticed these days. The drastic change in the behaviour, sudden aggressive attitude, rudeness followed by change in physical appearance, withdrawal syndrome are not new. In fact, owing to the rapidity of such accidents, the education system has taken the initiative of educating the youth about addiction and its consequences by its inclusion in the syllabi. The neglected part is the impact of this devastating problem in the mentality of the age. Not only is it troublesome but fatal too. At times, constant counselling fails to cure the victims. They can’t withstand the desire to smoke and drink and often lead themselves to depression when they fail to overcome their addictions. Curiosity and need then it becomes the cause and consequence of something unpredictable and unbearable.

The solution is nothing but self-consciousness and self-control. Teens have to learn to control their desires. The availability of credit cards is for the fulfilment of the necessity not for mere luxury and adventure. Curiosity is not good always. It could be dangerous. This age needs to realise that and understand all its pros and cons. They should make use of the brain not only for their studies but also for choosing the right from the wrong. Only then can the teens fight the odds and outshine all the darkness. Only then can the peak of humanity be attained.
