Beneath our Panties

In this poignant verse Nigerian poet, Olaitan, defines a woman, sensitive and vibrant, beyond her anatomy.

Beneath our panties are
The hot coals
Of knocks and punches
Of holes and broken punchlines.

Beneath our panties are
The silent echoes
Of oceanic tears;
The ones that flow
From the heart
To the eyes.

Beneath our panties are
The swollen smiles
Of the salty sourness
Of our spirits, souls and bodies.

Beneath our panties are
The autographs of scars…
Beneath our panties are
The footprints of life’s birches…
