The Nubile Maiden

Neelam tells us about the world of dreams and harsh realities, in this gender centric poem, exclusively for Different Truths.

A cool water-laden breeze blows,
Her cheeks are pink once again,
And when the rain drips slowly
Her lips turn ruby red,
She is exuberant, she is glowing,
Ah! The charm of the petrichor!

For a moment,
She is a carefree maiden once again,
Falling in love with life,
Lazily she lies on her couch
And thinks of nothing except her sweetheart,
Who, she assumes, will come
Crossing the seven seas
And be hers
Forever and forever and forever.

She is living
In a world of fairy tales
Where beasts turn into princes.
It’s a modern age
Where princes turn into beasts…

Little does she know
That her nubility will soon be plundered
And shred into pieces!
