Ritambhara tells us three ways to manage domestic waste to save the environment. A Different Truths exclusive.
It is not uncommon to see loads of plastic in the stomach of dead animals, who mistakenly consume them for food and end up losing their lives.
Nonetheless, it is not uncommon to see mounds of garbage hills in the outskirts of the cities or tons of garbage or hazardous waste being dumped in the rivers and oceans.
In fact, we have reached at a point where we should attend the SOS and contribute our best in saving our environment from further depletion.
Let’s have a look at three easy ways we can deal with the garbage, food scraps or other items we don’t require.
1. Decreasing Domestic Waste on a Daily Basis
We amount to a lot of waste in the landfills through our domestic chores. It is advisable to reduce the waste created by us on a daily basis.
We amount to a lot of waste in the landfills through our domestic chores. It is advisable to reduce the waste created by us on a daily basis. To begin with, a small measure such as carrying your own bag for shopping grocery, preferring items with minimum or no packaging, carrying our own water bottle and not buying the packaged water when you are outside, recycling your kitchen waste through vermi-composting, sharing the leftover food with the homeless, etc. can reduce the amount of waste we create in a day.
2. Reusing and Recycling Items not Needed
You should go paperless by choosing to pay online. Donate items that you no longer need.
It is equally important to reduce the waste you create and recycle if possible. You should go paperless by choosing to pay online. Donate items that you no longer need. In fact, things we haven’t used for more than a year should be donated as the chance of they getting used by you is very less and it’s better to offer that to the less privileged ones who would be happy and appreciate your effort and contribution in their life. It is better for the items to end up for use than in the landfill. So, learn to be generous and donate items such as old clothes, fabric scraps, old electronic items not required by you to a recycling facility, schools, homeless shelter, etc. so that it can be used by someone who really needs them. Reuse containers. Do not throw items in the landfill simply because they are outdated. Donate them if they don’t fulfill your aesthetic needs; believe me they hold a lot of importance for the less privileged ones.
3. Creating Awareness among Young Ones
Ask your kids not to waste food, water, paper or buy things that they don’t really need.
It is nothing new that the kids follow what they see. If you want your kids to grow up as persons sensitive to the environmental issues (which is need of the hour) you should teach them right from the beginning. Ask your kids not to waste food, water, paper or buy things that they don’t really need. It’s tough to make the kids understand in the modern world driven by consumerism, but we can certainly begin with. Let’s make them informed citizens.
