Massive Earthquake sends Tremors across India

At 7.25 pm, a massive earthquake, with its epicenter in Myanmar, send shock waves across India. While the tremors were strong in Guwahati and Kolkata, it was milder elsewhere. Here’s a report.

A massive earthquake at the Indo-Myanmar border, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, caused strong tremors in the entire Northeast and West Bengal, at 7.25pm, on Wednesday (April 13). Its epicenter was in Myanmar. The earthquake was felt across North India, right up to Delhi and in the South, the shock of the quake was reported from Chennai as well.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the magnitude of earthquake is 7.0. The tremors originated from 170 kilometers below sea-level.

The National Centre of Seismology considers it a major earthquake. The magnitude of tremors in the region of Assam was 6.8. Disaster management teams in the states of West Bengal and Assam have been alerted. Trinamool Congress (TMC) government has begun evacuation process in the state.

Strong tremors were felt in Guwahati, Kolkata and Patna, while the tremors were milder in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Chennai.

People in the Northeast and Kolkata blew conch shells, while alert residents of high-rise buildings across North India shrieked and cried, while scampering down.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams in Northeast, West Bengal and Bihar are on high alert. Relief commissions in Nagaland, Manipur and Assam are in constant co-ordination with NDRF.

The worst affected region of the earthquake is the area lying on the Indo-Myanmar border. Heavy casualties are expected from the region of Myanmar.

There was panic in Kolkata and Guwahati.
