What is Out of the Box Thinking?

Ideas are building blocks for change and when you are able to implement these ideas and measure the change you are close to becoming capable of “out of the box” thinking. Preeyan guides us through the creative process, in the weekly column, exclusively for Different Truths.

Many times, we fail to understand why certain things keep failing, and in those moments, we are lost in the problem so deep that we do not think, like the way a writer gets “the writer’s block”. I would say that this happens to most of us because we are so engrossed in the process and the day to day chores that we do not give time for our ability to think. To be able to develop this we need to practice this and practically implement what we thought of differently.

Ideas are building blocks for change and when you are able to implement these ideas and measure the change you are close to becoming capable of “out of the box” thinking.

All of us are born with this capability, it is just that we forget how to be able to do this. You will agree with me that as kids we did not need many toys to find a way to play, we just needed imagination and excitement, that made us just play with anything like imaginary friends, stones and pebbles, mud, water, paper, pencil and what not. Our sole purpose of playing was fulfilled because we thought out of the box.

As we started growing up we somewhere seem to have lost this ability to think along those lines. I realized it pretty late in my life and did some introspection. In this column, I feel that I may be able to help you just see things differently.

What are the key things that we need to practice every day? Let’s start with first taking some time to think. You need to allocate at least 15 minutes every day to just think. Fifteen minutes sounds easy but to focus and do it is difficult. So we need to allocate some time from our busy schedule to start thinking. For a few days you may draw a blank but at some point, there will be something that starts to shape up in your mind. Writing down these thoughts and ideas can help. Lot of you have the habit of writing a personal diary but seldom use it to your advantage. There is a lot that you can get out of doing this, so those who do not have this habit I would suggest you start at lease penning down what you think of during these sessions.

Then you need to start the habit of acceptance, tough to follow, but it is important that you channelize your mind to start accepting eventuality. Acceptance of success, acceptance of failure, acceptance of your capabilities and incapability’s, acceptance of the truth and the false and many such things have both positive and negative. This will help you accept the reality around you and not cloud your mind with stubborn ego and boast. This will make you feel more grounded and complete. Everyone has to at some point make this understanding and acceptance of self to ensure that you work towards the right path. It’s like being your own coach. The role of the coach is to encourage you at the same time identify your flaws and show you the right direction to take to make you a better player. It is just the same, but here you are doing it to yourself.

Always start thinking of the third person’s point of view. A good friend of mine once told me that if you have a problem that is so large that you don’t seem to be able to solve, just step aside, I mean in a mental state of mind. That just takes your mind of the problem and try to take a third person’s standpoint and you will realize that the solution is right in front of you. This made a lot of sense to me and I have always tried to do that with whatever I try to do. I may not be the most successful professional in my career as yet but I know I am on the right path.

Allow change. Change is one thing that most of us actually fear, that is because we are not sure of what is going to happen. Practice being fearless, always get yourself to think “let us see what happens when I do this”. It’s an attitude that has made a difference in many peoples lives. Some really renowned personalities have made their mark because of this attitude. Failure is the worst thing that can happen, but don’t let failures defeat you. The moment you accept defeat, there is nowhere else you can go and you lose the edge.

Most issues in life are related to the workplace for an adult, but since it is happening to you it is no different from all the personal issues you have managed to overcome or failed to try. Always be positive and approach a problem with a different twist, if you feel you are doing the same mistake, you are right, you need to do something different. What is it that you have to do differently is what you need to think of and if you are able to figure it out you then are thinking “out of the box”.

Have a thoughtful weekend, stay positive and let your mind wander around.

Cheers!
