Crossing the Threshold

Harshali describes her journey through the year as she is ready to cross the threshold into the New Year, as part of the Special Feature, exclusively for Different Truths.

As I bask in the glow of the golden sun,

Falling prey to the warmth of the merry rays

The last few days of this year, wave cheerily

A satisfied adieu to my gaze

I look at the beckoning year

Unsure of what I shall find

Will the days ahead bring joy

Or will I need valor

To tread the path before me

Unknown, mysterious

 But wait a moment

My mind proclaims

Look back, cross your t’s… dot your i’s

Once you step through this door

You will leave all that was old, behind

Unwilling to cross the threshold, just yet

I look over my shoulder, one last time

To sunny days of fame and applause

The book of my dreams I held

Its reality foreseen… fantasised, as a child

I saw love and happiness surround me

A few moments of struggle, of doubt

But all in all, I feel blessed

For having lived and juggled

The many roles that test

A conscious dreamer

I wrote what I pleased, filtered what I said

Painted with relish and expressed with abandon

Dancing to the tune within

Engulfed in thoughts of rabble-rousing,

Gave wings to what came naturally

Took the knocks on my chin.

And yet my heartbeat wanton

I peer into an opaque future

This crossroad that I stand on

Repeated every year

With a prayer on my lips and courage in my heart

I ready myself

To take the plunge

Face what may appear

An apparition or an abyss

In the coming year.
