Geethanjali Dilip revisits the year 2017, in this evocative prose-poem, as part of the Special Feature, exclusively for Different Truths.
Feet move forward much like time. So do days, months and years. Looking back according to me is to look at a reflection, as I would into a placid pond that mirrors truth, showing me what I have evolved to be this past year. In that pond I see leaves fallen and floating, free, light and bobbing with the breeze. Some leaves rot to mingle with the slush. Much like my memories of what I want to cherish or trash based on what they have caused me, relating to positive and negative emotions.
In that pond bowl, I see patches of the blue like never-ending springtime strewn with blessings, at times shadows that pantomime their way in a burlesque. I stand drenched in a torrential downpour of gloom, leaving me cold and cooped up huddled by the warmth of hope and voilà seasons flee past saying that everything just moves on.
A crystal ball looms up floating in my pupils like a rainbow washed bubble that I imagine might burst and pop on my face. But isn’t that the surprise of life when all one can do is to surrender to the coming time frames?
So here I am smiling at myself, laughing at my mistakes and crying in pain and joy simultaneously looking at who I am after having successfully launched an anthology in collaboration with some brilliant poets; I exhilarate as my heart skips a beat recollecting that many of my poems have been included in several anthologies, and my work has been recognised by way of accolades and awards that I will ever cherish.
This same bubble magnifies into my Earth home where I wonder at the continuous miracles as much as I cry helpless watching the anguish of fellow humans and all of existence. Yet I find a balance prevail and up I ascend with that bubble as if it were a hot air balloon.
And suddenly in my solitude, I drift with a silver cloud beckoning the new year to come when I reckon that everything happens for a reason and that there’s no regret in what has transpired. I don’t look back at my footprints but I carve my tracks ahead enjoying the journey more than the destination.
