As we work in a very challenging environment even a small negative impact can have a snowball effect on the outcome. So, what we say or how we say what we say needs to be calculative and thought through very well, advices Preeyan, in the weekly column, exclusively in Different Truths.
Words have the power of vitalising someone’s stream of thought, use it wisely you don’t know what your words have done to someone. You may say something “just like that” but the impact it had on the people listening to it is something you may never get to know. People write stories and books on this, trust me they are all true, it is an experience that they have had somewhere in their past. History has many such instances mentioned where words have created characters that are of colossal stature.
We are mere common men, what impact will words have on us? Is something that many people have asked me? Trust me, friends, there are times you need those kind words to push you up and there are times when you need those few words that sets you thinking and there are also those words you just don’t want to hear. With thoughtful words you can achieve one of the three things, Encouragement and boost confidence, create thoughtfulness and cautious approach and create discouragement and negativity.
Most people love to talk, and giving advice for free even when it is not expected, the impact of this is usually unnoticed. My suggestion to those who involve in this is to please restrain from being critical. What ever you say in a critical manner will have two discretely opposite effects. We used to have a Mathematics instructor in college who was the most critical in giving feedback, what I realised is that the effect on the positive students brought the best out of them and the effect on the negative or not so positive students was of complete disinterest and some of those friends had to repeat the paper over and over again.

I am sure that most of us have witnessed that the team with a very assertive, positive and involving team leader/manager happens to be the best team in the organization. The one most important thing that these leaders have in common is the fact that they choose the way they communicate very wisely. To start with positive attitude rubs on to those close to you. You can spread positivity by being very positive. Every chance they get to appreciate, they do not miss. They are not critically rude, but constructively assertive. They are always inclusive with the team and delegate responsibility with extreme care. They are very caring and understanding.
All these traits that I have mentioned are judgements that are being made about you. This judgement is done mainly from the words you choose to say. It makes a big difference.
If you need your words to be accepted by someone, you should be one of the persons who matters a lot to them. That is a place that cannot be reached just like that, it is the way you behave and treat them that they start looking up at you. If you are a person who likes being in control all the time and does not care about your subordinates at work, think twice, you will never be able to control them the day they start to revolt. The day the fear you had maintained in them is gone, you will lose all control. History has always told these stories, but some fail to ignore this. Let’s not do that we are no longer primitive people, our maturity levels at this age are much better than our ancestors at our age.
Be careful of the words you use, give that little time to listen and respond, because that little time will give your mind time to review what you have to say. Ensure that what you say is simple and clear, the more you complicate words and sentences, the tougher it gets to comprehend.
Choose your words, wisely, the power of it is incredible, use it wisely.
Cheers!
