There is panic and fear among hundreds of passengers at the Fort Lauderdale / Hollywood International Airport, as a gunman shot and killed 5 people and injured 13 before he nabbed by the police officers. The motive of the shootout is still not clear. A report.
It was frightening Friday at Fort Lauderdale / Hollywood International Airport. A lone gunman suddenly opened fire killing five and leaving eight people injured. He was nabbed and taken into custody, according to media reports, quoting law enforcement sources.
The shooter has been identified, according to the TSA, as Esteban Santiago, with a military ID.
The shootout was around the baggage claim inside Terminal 2, at 12:55pm. One of the passengers was quoted saying that initially he thought it was firecrackers. People were screaming and running helter-skelter. It seemed that he had run out of the bullets. This is when the police officers, who took less than a minute to respond and nabbed him.
The shooter is in custody. Though the motive is not known at the time of filing this report, terrorism is being ruled out, it was reported.
CNN report added, “Hundreds of passengers and airport workers could be seen gathering and evacuating via the tarmac. The airport tweeted that all services are “The airport has four terminals and serves more than 73,000 travelers every day. It ranks 21st in the U.S. in total passenger traffic, with more than 650commercial flights a day.”
